Knee Guards

Knee guards – you might also hear them called knee pads or protectors – are basically gear you wear on your knees to keep from getting hurt. They help cushion impacts and give your knees some support when you're working out, doing a job, or recovering from something.

They do a few things:

*   Keep you from getting banged up in falls and scrapes.
*   Support your knee joint, so it doesn't get too stressed.
*   Squeeze the area a little to help blood flow better and keep swelling down.

**Types of Knee Guards**

*   **Sports:** Think basketball, volleyball, biking, skating, and motocross. These are light and have bendy padding, like foam or gel. They're made to protect you when you fall but still let you move.

*   **Work:** Construction workers, plumbers, gardeners, and the like use these. They've got a tough outer shell, usually rubber or something like that, with thick padding inside. They're built to hold up when you're on your knees a lot and take a beating.

*   **Medical:** If you're getting over an injury, have arthritis, or need some joint stability, these are for you. They might be elastic sleeves that squeeze your knee, have adjustable straps, or even hinges to keep things in place.

*   **Motorcycle/Tactical:** For riding motorcycles, military stuff, or crazy sports. They’re tough, with hard shells and moving joints, and often cover your shins too. They protect you from big impacts and scrapes.

**What They're Made Of**

*   **Outer Shell:** Hard plastic or carbon fiber to take the hits.
*   **Inner Padding:** Foam, gel, or silicone to absorb shocks and be comfy.
*   **Lining:** Material to keep moisture away.
*   **Straps:** Elastic or Velcro to keep them snug.
*   **Hinges:** Metal or strong plastic for medical or tactical ones, helping you move in a safe way.

**How They Should Fit**

Getting the right size is key – it's gotta be comfy and actually work.

*   Measure around your thigh about four inches above your kneecap.
*   Then measure around your calf about four inches below your kneecap.

**Some tips:**

*   They should be snug, not super tight, so they don't slip but don't cut off your circulation.
*   For sports, go with stretchy sleeves.
*   If you need something heavy-duty, get straps you can adjust.

**Why Use Knee Guards?**

*   You're less likely to get bruises, cuts, or broken bones.
*   They keep your knee from moving too much and hurting your ligaments.
*   The squeeze helps with blood flow and reduces swelling, which helps with pain.
*   You'll feel more confident and stable when you're doing stuff that's hard on your knees.
*   They reduce wear and tear on your knee cartilage over time.

**Things to Watch Out For**

*   Too tight and they can mess with your blood flow.
*   If they don't fit right, they can rub you raw or slip around.
*   They're not a replacement for seeing a doctor if you're seriously hurt.
*   Keep them clean so they don't get stinky or grow bacteria.

**Taking Care of Them**

*   If they're fabric, wash them by hand or in the washing machine on a gentle cycle.
*   Let them air dry – don't use heat or put them in direct sunlight.
*   Wipe down the hard shell ones with a damp cloth and some soap.
*   Store them in a dry place so they don't get moldy.

**What to Get for What You Do**

*   **Basketball/Volleyball:** Soft foam sleeve – light and bendy.
*   **Biking/Skating:** Hard shell with foam – protects against scrapes.
*   **Construction:** Thick rubber or gel pad – tough and comfy for kneeling.
*   **After an Injury:** Hinged brace or compression – medical-grade support.
*   **Motorcycle/Tactical:** Hinged shell – covers your whole knee and shin.

**Do You Need Knee Guards?**

*   If your knees hurt or swell after you do stuff.
*   If you play sports with a lot of impact or contact.
*   If your job involves kneeling or crawling around.
*   If you've hurt your knees before or they feel unstable.
*   Even just as a way to keep your knees in good shape as you get older.

**Some Terms to Know**

*   **Patella:** Your kneecap.
*   **Compression Sleeve:** A tight sleeve that supports muscles and helps blood flow.
*   **Hinged Brace:** Has metal or plastic hinges on the sides for support.
*   **Impact Absorption:** How well something spreads out the force of a hit.
